Event details

American photographer David LaChapelle has been exhibiting his work since the early 1980s, and the current exhibition of his work at Prague’s Galerie Rudolfinum is a retrospective of his work, though emphasizing the recent work. LaChapelle has developed a name for himself as an advertising photography icon, though he’s currently turning away from this to focus on more artistic endeavors. His characteristic style capturing brightly saturated colors and surrealistic imagery transcends the mode of expression though, advertising or artistic, and has simply come to represent his visual eye.

LaChapelle said of the exhibition, “I am presenting here a selection of pictures that best portrays the consistent themes I have been exploring throughout my life. From some of my earliest works that were made for and exhibited in galleries in New York’s East Village during the 1980s, through the magazine years using popular celebrity and fashion publications to reach a wider audience, make conceptually challenging photos and question the very social structures from which they came to be. Culminating in 2006 with a retreat from the ‘world,’ a re-evaluation of my life took place in a cabin in the rainforest where I lived and continue to call my home. This contemplative introspection allowed a new chapter to unfold, helping to create a sustainable farm on an island in the tropics, before re-emerging somewhat awakened so as to be free to examine my life. By exploring the paradox that my life appears to be I found the thread that binds it together.”

Thus Spoke LaChapelle will be on display at Galerie Rudolfinum until 26 February 2012.
