Two Faces of Azerbaijan

In his work 'Two Faces of Azerbaijan', French-Italian photographer and journalist Jean-Marc Caimi examines the ambivalence of living conditions in Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan. His work captures the stark contrast between the beautification of the city with billions of petrol-dollars and the precarious reality of locals facing forced eviction as Azerbaijan attempts to appeal to the West. Caimi gives utterance to the pitiful conditions of Karabeh refugees on 'Winter Boulevard', a new section in the outskirts of Baku where many of those forced from their homes have been relocated. Caimi's eye for composition and suggestive play with depth-of-field illustrate the subject in a way that exceeds mere documentation and enters a stage of aesthetic involvement.
