The Zone

Returning to the landscapes of his childhood, Robin de Goede (1978, Netherlands) remembers, “my imagination often took part of me, and I could find myself in a fairy-tale-like world filled with mythical creatures.” Offering an opportunity to escape back into this fictional world, these personal tales are reconstructed with friends, artists and dancers, taking the place of the creatures and nymphs that once filled his young imagination.

De Goede confronts the actions and the reality of these characters as they engage with their natural surroundings and “abstracted territory” that has been designated to them. They no longer inhabit his fairy-tale world, but they are not fixed by reality either. Initially in search for old childhood memories and lost worlds, de Goede explains that he saw the series begin to reflect a question that is universally considered: “what is my meaning and what am I doing here?”
