In photography, we often debate the exact meaning of being a 'professional'. The fact that every dictionary and encyclopedia defines the word in a different way doesn't help the matter. Never the less a 'profession' can be understood to be 'a vocation founded upon specialised educational training, the purpose of which is to supply objective counsel and service to others, for a direct and definitive compensation.'
