In her series Solution, Russian photographer Polina Washington (b. 1992) explores the intricate beauty in everyday objects and parts of nature. From broken mirrors to flat tires to trees and sand, Washington highlights the beauty in things we usually think of as mundane. In the photographer’s own words, “we’re surrounded with beauty everywhere and in everything – we just need to start paying attention to it”. This beauty at times even lies in something torn or smashed.
Washington photographs in documentary style and therefore the objects and places don’t appear to be out of the ordinary; if anything they come across as neglected. Nevertheless, the series as a whole calls our attention to the unique aesthetic qualities that these objects and places possess. It is Washington’s focus on the ‘ordinary’ that calls on us as viewers to notice the beauty of these facets.
