In 1893 Antoon van Berkom, along with three friends, murdered a policeman in the Dutch city of Oss. The unwritten rule ‘you don’t betray a buddy’ was applied, so the four of them all served a term of 13 years in prison for the crime. Antoon’s family, father Martinus and mother Johanna van Berkom, along with the other seven children, fled by boat to America. After his imprisonment, Antoon followed them on this journey to the United States, where he continued his life as Anthony Vanberkom. Almost a century later, figuring out in what way she was part of this tragic family history, Fieke decided to go and visit Powers Lake, a small village in North Dakota.
