Left Behind is an ongoing project that started in 2013, when Isabella Ståhl (b. 1984) returned to the rural North of Sweden, where she grew up. In the series she revisits her childhood memories of living in the small village, and tries to find out why, when she lived there, she despised the place so much for its "dull normality" and ultimately left for New York, one of the biggest cities in the world.
In Left Behind, Ståhl presents the quiet hills around the village, but also people drinking or wandering around aimlessly. While working on the series, Ståhl gradually became more accepting of her place of birth. As she puts it: "They are average situations that feel exceptional. People don’t realize it as they live, but nostalgia proves even the most dull, casual moments to be of value."
