Korea 2013

London-based photographer Julia Fullerton-Batten posed street-cast young Korean women in her latest work shot in the country's capital city, Seoul. The images, according to Fullerton-Batten, "illustrate the country’s history, the political tensions between South and North Korea, and its cultural traditions, such as the tea ceremony and gift giving." The women are costumed in the traditional Hanbok and placed in scenes from the modern city as a backdrop. When combined with the use of props (often used symbolically) and staged lighting, the resulting images simultaneously portray a formal scene of beauty like fashion photography while also informing and asking questions.
