Bulgarian photographer Eugenia Maximova was inspired to begin her project on the Balkans while participating in a documentary photography masterclass in 2010. She visited and photographed most of the Balkan countries, including Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Kosovo, Macedonia, Montenegro, Romania and Serbia. A region mired in conflict and its aftershock effects, the Balkans still struggle to rebuild both their cities and their societies, and tensions remain. Maximova focuses her project on the kitchens of these regions, a room of the home that holds a lot of culture in an understated an indirect way. She describes the motivation behind her project 'Kitchen Stories': "When I set out to tell a story about the Balkans, it was food that sprang to mind as being the only thing people in the whole region agree that they have in common.  After five centuries of Ottoman occupation we have all continued to eat the dishes they brought."

Maximova is currently crowd-sourcing funds to publish the project as a book, open until January 19, 2013.

Eugenia Maximova was included in the BKMRKS section of GUP #35, The Celebration Issue.
