The Californian desert is a barren place where still, a lot can be found: extreme temperatures, occasional UFO sightings, cacti in many different forms and also some people who chose to live there. Photographer Yurian Quintanas Nobel aimed his lens on the latter for his project Happy Nothing.
In the series we see people who got tired of the rat race of modern society and went to the desert to live their lives as they want to, instead of a more conventional manner. Ex-convicts, retirees, war veterans and other people who have seen a lot during their lives came to find peace in the desolate landscapes and always predictable weather. In his pictures, Quintanas manages to capture the stillness found under the soaring Californian desert sun, creating a unique setting that is clearly far away from the busy streets of the caffeine-fueled cities.
