The objects of a residence are inanimate, yet draw meaning from our ability to understand their significance in building a life. Dutch photographer Edith Diederiks (1984) returned to the house where she grew up, and began to play. Chairs, duvets and curtains become characters in Diederiks’ domestic theatre. Little scenes play out, revealing acts of dominance and boredom, egotism and submission, peace and tension – and, just as in the activities and interactions shared between people living under the same roof, the quotidian comes to define the essence.

Diederiks' series Play was featured as a portfolio in GUP #49, Intimacy
