The End of Winter

The End of Winter, a photo series from German photographer Daniel Schumann (1981), started unexpectedly: with a car crash. The accident destroyed a substantial amount of Schumann’s photography gear, and prompted him to question what photography meant to him, and what its role was in his life. He began a process of examination, cycling through riddles of destruction and creation. For the series, he destroys numerous cameras through various means, crushing and cooking them, then placing the object on a colourful backdrop to be examined by yet another camera. Each image becomes another word in a love letter to photography, another interrogation to an inexplicable relationship. The deconstruction of the question approaches the fervour of an exorcism: obsessive, purposeful, violent, spiritual and emotional.

The End Of Winter was featured in GUP#51, The Rituals Issue.
