Over 30 years ago Michael Somoroff made a series of portraits of great American and European masters of photography: Elliott Erwitt, Andreas Feininger, Helmut Newton, Duane Michals, Sid Kaplan, André Kertész, Brassaï and Lartigue, among others, all mentored Somoroff as a young gifted photographer. He had been introduced to their work and subsequently to many of the photographers themselves by his father, the pre-eminent still-life photographer Ben Somoroff – a student of Alexey Brodovitch. These photo sessions granted to Michael were deeply personal, and it was initially never his intention to make the resulting images public.
In this series of nine images, the subjects included are as follows (in order): André Kertész, Arnold Newman, Brassaï, Cornell Capa, Elliott Erwitt, Helmut Newton, Jacques Henri Lartigue, Mary Ellen Mark, and Robert Doisneau.
