Daria Tuminas - Ivan and the Moon

Daria Tuminas (1984, Russia) wrote her MA thesis at the St. Petersburg State University on amateur photography and is currently enrolled on the MA in Film and Photographic Studies at Leiden University. Initially a freelance journalist specialising in photography, and the coordinator and curator of an International Summer School in Photography focusing on the new language of documentary and journalistic photography, Tuminas can now also be considered a significant photographer in her own right.

Ivan and the Moon, winner of the 2010 Viewbook PhotoStory contest, is about two brothers, Ivan (16) and Andrey (14) – nicknamed ‘Moon’ -  who live in a remote village in Northern Russia. They are not like city teenagers: they have completely different moral values and live in a self-created fairy-tale world in which they go hunting and fishing, can use a joiner’s chisel, and play with ghosts in abandoned places. Mature and childlike, naive and enigmatic; thanks to Tuminas, the mysteriousness and complexity of these brothers’ world poses more questions than it answers.
