Interrogations

Interrogations, a project from Canadian photographer Donald Weber (1973), won 1st Prize (Stories) in the Portraits category of World Press Photo 2012. The first part of his book shows Ukrainian landscapes and scenes. The second part shows harrowing portraits of people who are being interrogated. The drama and extremity of the situations, as well as the shocking fact that the photos exist at all, can easily call into question their authenticity — are these real people or simply actors playing a part. Unfortunately, they’re all too real. Weber explains that the people are being interrogated by the police, though the accusers are off-camera, faceless representations of power and intimidation. Forceful in their documentation of vulnerability in a way that renders location, time, and circumstances almost irrelevant, Weber’s study of power is profoundly affecting on a base human level.
