After years of experimentation photography eventually developed into a valid form of communication for Benjamin Goss (1977, USA). By internalising the imagery he sees every day, Goss gives it the time and space it needs to germinate and eventually blossom into something dark and wonderful. This atmosphere is predominant in all of his work, evoking a timeless, poetic quality, abetted by a sure command of darkroom craft and a taste for pushing his visuals just slightly beyond. His style came to him over many years spent in the darkroom, resulting in these anti-digital, mid/large format portraits that leave a certain uneasiness or tension. Maybe this is so because the subjects possess the complexities, strengths and weaknesses common to us all? Goss is a black magician who believes in humankind, even though we are strange.
