Till the Cows Come Home

Dan Nelken (USA) has been photographing County Fairs since 1999, observing the rural events which take place over the summertime in celebration of the harvest. Appearing almost anachronistic in today’s technology and corporation focused society, Nelken’s photographs pays homage to the pride of these people in local production and competition. A study of mostly portraits of the competitors and their livestock, Till the Cows Come Home manages to capture both affection and awkwardness. Innate in the photos is an awareness of the peculiarity and humour of the County Fairs, yet also a deep appreciation for the people and their way of living. The result is charming and colourful, and a reminder for the value of family farming over factory farming.

Till the Cows Come Home is also available as a book, published by Kehrer.
