With Things Here and Things Still to Come, Portuguese photographer José Pedro Cortes (Porto, Portugal 1976) produces an unexpected and ambiguous picture of Tel Aviv, puzzling his viewer by combining images of semi-naked women and deserted urban settings. The women who appear in Cortes’ portraits, blemishes and all, are in fact four Jewish American women whose decision to immigrate to Israel in order to temporarily serve in the military later became a permanent one.
