Photographer Melanie Cleary has a strong interest in rituals and tradition led her to one of the most popular holiday destinations in South Africa: North Beach, Durban. Each year, more than 100 000 visitors come together to celebrate the new year on the beaches and the pools there. In this series,  shot on 31 December 2011 and 1 January 2012, Cleary captures iconic individual portraits set in a backdrop of thousands of people celebrating their holidays.
