For 25 years, the camera has been Francisco Mata Rosas’s (Mexico City, 1958) excuse for walking the city, and the vehicle that has made it possible for him to relate to his own people. Over these years, he frequently discovered parallels between the representations within the fiestas and daily life in Mexico City, he noticed the relationship between political acts and religious expressions, and managed to link urban landscapes with moods. What is collective in the individual?  What is it that maintains coexistence in the city? With a sense of humour and irony that are part of our reality, Mata Rosas often ran right into what he had already seen, and recognised in the midst of the messiness and the visual chaos pre-Hispanic, colonial and contemporary art. All he had to do was isolate it.
