Survivors of Chernobyl

Serge van Cauwenbergh (1973, Belgium) visited the Zones of Exclusion to work on a photo essay about Chernobyl and the aftermath of the nuclear disaster. Pripyat, a city in the north of Ukraine near the border with Belarus, was founded to house the power plant workers and their families. The city has been anbandoned since the explosions. van Cauwenbergh was introduced to the elderly still living in Chernobyl and surrounding areas. They returned to their houses shortly after the nuclear distaster, and some even claim they never left the area. Their dissapointment in the way the government dealt with this catastrophy is still tangible in the series.

In 2006 we published a portfolio from Chernobyl by Martijn de Vries titled The Naked City. Martijn’s series show the desolate places within the exclusion zones.
