Submission policy

Print magazine: Please note that we do not accept submissions for our print issue. The included series are chosen by our editorial team to correspond with a theme, which we do not announce in advance.

Digital magazine (website): If you would like your work considered for the online version of our magazine, it can be sent to our Online Editor by email. We recommend that you observe the following guidelines:
- Title the subject line of your email with “Submission” and the name of your series
- Include images from a specific series, rather than an overall portfolio. Attach 10-15 lo-res images, or a link. DO NOT use services such as WeTransfer which have an expiry date for downloading the images. DO NOT compress the files in a way that requires special software to unpack it (like RAR files).
- Include an artist’s statement describing the project.

Please note that we do not consider individual images, nor do we commission photographers to produce bodies of work.

It may take anywhere from 2-12 weeks for us to view your submission. Please understand that, due to the amount of emails received, we may only respond to work which we are interested in showing.

Portfolio Reviews

Portfolio Reviews are often an excellent way to get your work noticed by industry professionals, including GUP’s editors. Members of the GUP editorial team participate regularly in organised Portfolio Review events, for example those hosted by photo festivals. Because we recognise that our readers may not always be able to attend one of these events, or perhaps would like more personal or extended attention, we are now offering portfolio review sessions on an individual basis.

The terms of these individually organised portfolio review sessions can be arranged with some flexibility, but in principle would consist of a 1-hour, one-on-one consultation, for a fee of 75 EUR plus VAT. All reviews will take place in Amsterdam, unless an alternate location is arranged by mutual convenience. To be explicitly clear, these portfolio review sessions are in no way tied to an agreement to publish the artist’s work, but are forums for discourse about the work, to receive feedback and guidance for the photographer’s artistic practice. In an informal and honest dialogue, our portfolio review sessions will offer a critique of your photographic work and recommendations for expanding your practice in the context of producing art.

The following members of the editorial team are available for portfolio review sessions:
Peter Bas Mensink, Publisher
Erik Vroons, Chief Editor
Katherine Oktober Matthews, Online Editor

To request a portfolio review, please email your preferred reviewer with the specifics of your request. Organizations or institutions who would like more extensive or custom services are also invited to query our editorial team.

TIP: You may also like to read Katherine’s blog article So, What Do You Think? which describes the best way to get the most out of your portfolio review experience.
