#20 — The black issue

Black is not a color. Black is devoid of every form of light. A photography magazine with black as its theme is in fact a contradiction in terms, because in order to take photographs light is essential. In GUP#20 you will see images that give the impression of being 'black', but are not black. Such as Erik Hijweege's black albinos or Roger Ballen's white South Africans. And jazz played by a white person is still black music, just as blacks do not look black wen they have been so colorfully photographed by Phyllis Galembo.

In this issue much more 'black' work is presented. Photographers highlighted in this issue include: Gordon Parks, Christien Jaspars, Phyllis Galembo, Roger Ballen, Pieter Hugo, Jeroen Hofman and Paul D'Amato, among many others.
