Who would have thought that picking up cigarette butts off the streets would make for a masterful photographic series. Irving Penn’s renowned series Cigarettes, first exhibited at New York City’s MoMA in 1975, is now being displayed in its entirety for the very first time, at Hamiltons Gallery, London.
Cigarettes sheds light on the development of the still life under Penn’s lens, whereby something as disposable and worthless as a cigarette butt is endowed with artistic value. A total of 26 images are on display at the private gallery, in an exhibition that is very much up to museum standards.
