As part of the PhotoIreland Festival, comes the exhibition Neither, featuring the work of Irish photographer Kate Nolan in Kaliningrad, Russia. From 2009 to 2012, Nolan immersed herself in the lives of the women of Kaliningradl, a federal subject of Russia that is geographically removed from the mainland, situated between Poland, Lithuania and the Baltic sea. There she sought to explore and understand the many difficulties faced by the women of Kaliningrad, whose hopes of a better future are fostered by their geographical proximity to the modernity of Europe, but hindered by the cultural attachment to Russia that still remains.
Kate Nolan sheds light on the ambiguous nature of post-soviet times and culture, demonstrating tender insight into Kaliningrad’s women. As an ongoing project, Neither will also be featured in London, Cardiff Minneapolis as well as in Kaliningrad. The project is also in the process of being published as a book, intended to come out by the end of 2012.
