Atlanta’s High Museum of Art is now featuring the work of the three contemporary photographers Martin Parr, Kael Alford and Shane Lavalette in an exploration of the American south. The exhibition entitled Picturing the South showcases the latest additions to The High’s commissions series.
While documentary photographer Martin Parr’s images provide a humorous and satirical picture of Atlanta, Georgia, Kael Alford photographs her grandmother’s native Louisiana, and Shane Lavalette explores the role and impact of music in the contemporary Southern landscape.
To accompany the photographs on display comes a short documentary produced by filmmaker Neal Broffman registering Martin Parr’s encounters with his subjects, entitled Hot Spots. The work of the three artists combine to paint an accurate and contemporary picture of the South in light of its weighty history as the seat of the Civil Rights Movement and home to much cultural diversity.
