The exhibition Nightvisions bring us the experimental work of award-winning Brazilian photographer Luiz Braga. Traditionally an adherent of analogue photography, Braga was struck by the possibilities of the infrared function on his digital camera, which allowed him to photograph in almost complete darkness. He went on to experiment in daylight, utilising filters to further manipulate lighting, and producing otherworldly monochromatic images wherein the natural colour of the landscape –that of his native Pará– is completely altered.

Despite Braga’s use of technology and additional devices to achieve such effects, his black and white photographs retain traces of early photography in their accentuated shadowing and their subsequent emphasis on the formal qualities of the images. Braga avoids an idealised portrayal of the Amazon region within the state of Pará, depicting its residents in all their simplicity and modesty, alongside the experimental quality of his work.

Nightvisions will be on display until the 21st of July, at São Paulo’s Galeria Leme.
