Event details
In the upcoming exhibition entitled Inside Cairo, award-winning Swiss photographer Michael Von Graffenried provides penetrating insight into the daily life and reality of the Egyptian capital. Van Graffenried’s panoramic images of Cairo evidence his desire and ability to fully disappear into the urban landscape, whereby he removes the influence that knowledge of a photographer’s presence may have on the captured environment. This was principally achieved through his use of a small panoramic Widelux camera, which, held against his chest, allowed Van Graffenried to go by unnoticed.
Unlike photographs documenting Cairo in the years prior to the revolution of 2011, Michael Van Graffenried’s images fully infiltrate the streets of Cairo and the people that populate them. Perhaps it is the panoramic format that encloses and pulls the spectator into the photographed environment, fusing the two worlds and placing the viewer mid-action.
