Event details

Controversial as well as arresting, the images of world-renowned photographer Nobuyoshi Araki have been an influence to many. The Japanese photographer is famous for his intimate, snapshot-style images of women often tied up with ropes (kinbaku is a Japanese art of rope-tying) and of colorful, sensual flowers. As an artist who reacts strongly to his own emotions, Araki uses his photographic work as a medium for experiencing them more fully.

While his photographs tend to shock, at the same time they posess a mysteriously tender quality as they lay out Araki’s inner feelings completely bare and open. Behind the glamour and passion lies an ever-present, uncomfortable sadness.

The Three Shadow’s Gallery will present Sentimental Journey, a series of photographs taken by Araki during his honeymoon in 1971. The series established Araki as an influential photographer with a strong individual vision. The subsequent series Spring Journey and Winter Journey documents the passing of Araki’s wife Yoko, as well as the death of his beloved cat Chiro. The flat, visual angle and technique used to depict these stories of mourning and grief illustrate a completely different side to Araki’s oeuvre.
