Event details

Tokyo-born Chino Ostuka left Japan for England when she was ten years old. The search for an individual cultural identity has been the red thread leading through her photographic career. By means of several self portraits, she seeks to discover & visualise her ever-present Japanese roots looking from a Western point of view. Her images investigate questions such as, how do we save our memories? In what way are memories reconstructed in the mind? Can photography help us remember?

Ten years of work – including the before unseen series Memoriography 1 & 2 – will be brought together for the first time at Huis Marseille. Besides this, new work has been made exclusively for the exhibition, based on Otsuka’s research on how 19th century Japanese culture influenced the history of the Dutch.
