The Photographers Gallery in Cape Town is presenting Melanie Cleary’s second solo exhibition: New Year’s Day. Cleary shot the series in Durban, South Africa, on 31 December 2011 and 1 January 2012. The photographer’s strong interest in rituals and tradition led her to one of South Africa’s most popular holiday destinations: Durban’s North Beach. Each year, more than 100 000 visitors come together to celebrate the new year on the beaches and the pools of Durban’s North Beach. In this series, Cleary captures iconic individual portraits set in a backdrop of thousands of vacation-goers. 

For New Years Day, Cleary was shortlisted in the prestigious PDN Photo Annual 2012 competition in New York.
