Among the German contemporary art scene, Thomas Demand (1964) is a leading figure. Famous for recreating scenes of political or social events, he carefully uses paper to produce life-size models, whereafter he photographs the scene to create his images. He uses common settings that at a first glance look entirely normal, until upon a closer inspection seem to contain strange details and textures. This subtle ‘wrongness’ makes the viewer develop a strange feeling of alienation towards the image.
Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo is the first Japanese museum to present a comprehensive view of Demand’s art, from his earliest works to his recent films.
