In OFFSIDE – Football in Exile, Dirk-Jan Visser tells the story of FK Qarabag Agdam, an Azerbaijani football club in exile longing for an ill-fated return to their home ground in the ghost city of Agdam. The city was occupied and destroyed as a result of the war on Nagorno-Karabakh between 1991 and 1993. While incoming grenades hit the town for months on end, the Imaret stadium in downtown Agdam remained packed for home matches as players and fans pledged to continue daily life as normal as possible. The club is still a living symbol of hope and pride for over half a million Azerbaijani refugees. The tragedy is revealed through the eyes of people involved: football players, fans and coaches, fighters and refugees, sons and daughters, wives and widows.
