Team Gallery is presenting an exhibition of new work by photographer Ryan McGinley. Entitled Animals, the series consists of McGinley’s color studio portraits of live animals with nude models. McGinley traveled to an array of sanctuaries, zoos, and rescue establishments across the United States with his mobile studio, capturing the animals on camera with the help of animal trainers. McGinley doesn’t consider the animals simply as props; the animals are in fact the main subjects in the images. A tension as well as a tenderness is present between the creatures and the humans, as the wild animals crawl over the bodies, nibbling and clawing as they go.
Sexually tensed as well as humorous – in one of the images a monkey hangs from a male mode’s pubic hair – the series is in fact a study of anatomy. While contrasting eachother, the bodies at times seamlessy collide together. The bright colors bring an absurd, phsychedelic element to the images.
