Starting April 20th, the World Press Photo exhibition will open at the Oude Kerk in Amsterdam. The winning images of the international photojournalism contest will be on display there, until June 17th. Winners are selected from over 100,000 images submitted to the contest from around the world. After Amsterdam, the exhibition will travel to over 100 locations worldwide.
The winner of the World Press Photo of the year 2011 was the Spanish Samuel Aranda. His image of a woman holding her wounded son is her arms, in a mosque that was temporarily being used as a hospital, earned him the prestigious prize. Aranda took the picture in assignment for the New York Times on October 15th in Sanaa, the capital of Jemen, during riots against the reign of president Ali Abdullah Saleh.
