Event details

Visiting the archeological site of the Sagalassos in Turkey, photographers Bruno Vandermeulen and Danny Veys were given the assignment to photograph the past. However, being intrigued as well as confused by this assignment, they decided to take on a different approach. Questioning the objectivity of their lenses, the photographers started asking themselves questions such as; how can you capture the way in which a place was written by historical events? How do you portray the remains of a historical place, and is it possible to fit it back into a modern context? This approach became the starting point for ‘Imagining History’.

Alongside Vandermeulen and Veys photographs, the work of internationally renowned photographers Shimon Attie, Raphaël Dallaporta, Sally Mann, Bart Michiels, and Simon Norfolk is on display in this exhibition, as well as a selection of photographs taken from FOMU’s own collection. As a whole, the exhibition researches the role a photographer plays in bringing a historical place back to life.
