Event details
American painter and photographer Chuck Close (1940) has emerged as one of the best known portrait artists since the 1960s. Most of his paintings are large portraits based on photographs of family or friends. With approximately 125 works ranging from 1972 to the present day, the exhibition Prints: Process and Collaboration at the Kunsthal Rotterdam provides a comprehensive overview of his work. Exhibits include pieces that demonstrate the various print techniques Close experiments with, such as etching, aquatint, lithography, handmade paper, engravings, silk screen, traditional Japanese woodblock printing and linoleum cuts. Close uses photography as his greatest source of inspiration, incorporating photographic effects such as optical distortion and depth of field into his paintings. The large formats so characteristic of his oeuvre clearly demonstrate the details that build up an image, such as the grains that become visible when photographs are enlarged.
