Event details
A rare event in today’s world, here is an exhibition that reveals the outstanding photographic work of a US artist, Cy Twombly, famous above all for his distinctive paintings, spontaneous, colourful, almost primitive, on whose canvasses he declaimed the names of mythological heroes and his favourite poems. But no gulf separates his paintings from these 100 Polaroid images, reworked with pigment via a photocopying machine. They are brought face-to-face with a relevant selection of paintings and drawings, as well as with a film by the British artist Tacita Dean. Twombly began taking his own works as a subject, like Richter or Brancusi, in the 1950s. Armed with his Polaroid, whose autofocus he had disconnected, he pursued an on-going reflection on light, volumes and spaces, deletion and abstraction. Enlarged using a photocopier, these soft-focus images become more pronounced and reinforce a dreamlike dimension of time and duration.
