Decisions, decisions. What is a child supposed to wear to a birthday party? Should they go as a princess, dancer, soldier or astronaut? And who decides, mother or child? Vee Speers pondered these ques- tions on her daughter’s birthday. Her book is a col- lection of portraits taken of the children who turned up either over dressed or theatrically so, the children looking bizarrely old for their age. Speers asked dif- ferent ‘partygoers’ to pose in front of the same white wall and look directly into the lens for a portrait photograph. Any sense of height (or lack thereof ) is lost, creating baffling yet fascinating images.
