The Police Band of Surinam

Sara Blokland (Ede, 1969) visited Surinam in 2009 to follow the local police band intensively for several weeks. She is acclaimed for her ability to reconstruct archive material into intimate documentation. The book begins with portraits of the 32 members of the band, followed by a series of still lifes of the rehearsal space, instruments, uniforms and performances. Archival images are added to this to place the police bands activities in an historical context. By appropriating multi-media assets, combined with her own images, Blokland offers a dry but nevertheless poetic reconstruction of an omnipresent element of Surinam: the music played by the police band, marching through daily life.
