Back to the '80s. With a Leica in hand, Depardon wandered the streets of New York. He saw and he shot. Not once did he look through his lens. He photographed 'in the blind'. He was not satisfied with the results. Twenty-seven years later, he noticed that many of his subjects were aware that they were being photographed. Faces seek out the lens.
