George W. uttered the word ‘homeland’ in a speech shortly after 9/11. The word didn’t feel right to Nina Berman. She confirmed that feeling with a trip through the USA between 2001 and 2007, the country seemed to be ridden with fear and strong nationalistic tendencies. This is a country where families amuse themselves by attending Air Force shows en masse during the weekends, where Police corps in inconsequential towns are on ‘anti-terrorist training’ courses instead of attending to the usual duties associated with small townships, a country where the victim role in a simulated nuclear attack costs $15 an hour. This is ‘Homeland’, a powerful photo document of a nation in a state of confusion. Let’s hope Obama can restore the US to the ‘land of hope and dreams’.
