The Last Days of Shishmaref

In her third book Dana Lixenberg tells the story of an Eskimo community that has become a victim of global warming. The scenes of family life, portraits and images of packed houses and abandoned possessions that appear from beneath the melting snow in summer, go beyond the persistent stereotype of the ‘noble savage’. The Last Days Of Shishmaref is a nuanced and revealing portrait of a community caught between Inupiaq tradition, the American way of life (complete with iPods and massive refrigerators) and an uncertain future.
