The invisible empire

The Ku Klux Klan has been one of America’s most secretive organizations since it was founded in 1866. It rose to fame as a result of its huge resistance to the end of slavery. Its secretive nature means nobody really knows what’s hidden behind those white masks. Thanks to photojournalist Anthony Karen, we now have a little more inside information about this notorious community: We get a glimpse of modern Klan life; the cross-lighting ceremony; a Klan wedding; the initiation process. Individual portraits reveal the people that choose to wear the pointy hats. Unrestricted access to the shadowy society... Meet the Ku Klux Klan.
