During the Soviet regime Russian writers Ilya Ilf and Evgeny Petrov came to America as special correspondents for the publication Pravda (The Truth). In 1935, they embarked on a ten-week journey through America, recording the American life in writing and through the lens of a Leica camera. Back in Russia, their work was published in Ogonek and in the book Odnoetazhnaia Amerika. This reconstruction of Ilf and Petrov’s ‘photographic travelogue’ documents the USA in a satiric way. American Road Trip offers not only the opportunity to see the America of the 1930’s through communist eyes, but is also an interesting example of Soviet photojournalism before Stalinism.
