There’s so much that we share that it’s time we’re aware: it’s a small world after all.” This Disney motto functions as the introduction to Dream City by photographer Anoek Steketee and journalist Eefje Blankevoort. This beautifully designed book (Sybren Kuiper aka SYB is one of the leading book designers in the world) is the result of a journey through the constructed world of amusement parks in Iraq, Rwanda, Lebanon, Israel, the Palestinian Territories, Colombia, Indonesia, Turkmenistan and the USA. Indeed, the Disney motto reflects in the idea that, despite the cultural, sociological and political differences, people all over the world share a need for entertainment; a timeless human need to escape from daily reality, in a communal, constructed space. The clean aesthetics arriving from Steketee’s staged documentary approach – think Pieter Hugo and Alex Soth – is consistent throughout the book and very well works together with the essayist approach of Blankevoort. All together, Dream City is a very balanced result of a long-term collaboration that sets the standard for other ‘slow journalism’ projects; a  very elegant combination of aesthetics and information that defines the paradigm of today’s documentary approach.
