The Atelier Smedsby workshop is a one-year distance learning class incorporating three individual/group meetings in Paris, led by JH Engström. In between meetings in Paris, the participants will report on the progress of their works via e-mail or Skype. Students will be able to ask questions, demonstrate the evolution of their work, receive evaluation and feedback with the goal of moving forward in the accomplishment of their personal projects.
The workshop will take place from May 2013 to May 2014, with a maximum of 15 partcipants. Enrolment is open now until March 30, 2013.
The workshop will be directed by JH Engström (b. 1969, Sweden). Engström has exhibited widely on an international scale and has published numerous photography books, including Shelter (Bokförlaget DN), Trying to Dance (Journal), Haunts (Steidl), CDG/JHE (Steidl), From Back Home (together with Anders Petersen, MaxStröm) and La Residence (Journal). He also makes films.
Engström says of his motivation to create the workshop, "After my long experience of five day workshops, I got the idea to create a longer workshop : ATELIER SMEDSBY. I wanted to spread out the possibilities of contact between the participants and me, since time is such an important tool in the photographic process. To me workshops are about starting a bigger process. A workshop should not end when it ends. Maybe it doesn't even start until it ends. And that's a great thing. One of the main goals of this yearlong workshop will be to open up and embrace each other's fears and weaknesses as well as our strengths of course. To press the shutter is not that difficult. It's much more difficult to have the courage to make photographs that are talking about things that really matter to each and every one of us. Let's be courageous!"
