GUP Magazine is celebrating! What’s more, we’re doing so in great company. This is our 60th issue and to commemorate the occasion we pay tribute to a number of esteemed photographers who have reached or will soon arrive at the remarkable age of 60.
Three established current or former members of Magnum Photos – Carl De Keyzer (b. 1958), Lise Sarfati (b. 1958) and Mark Power (b. 1959) – present a fine selection of their own work. Each of them has also been invited to introduce a younger photographer who they think deserves to be acknowledged too: Sanne De Wilde & Bénédicte Kurzen, Ela Pokowska and Valerio Spada are therefore lauded with a portfolio in this issue.
Furthermore, we are delighted to present an exclusive and extensive interview: an intimate talk between two major figures from the realm of Dutch photography. Curator Wim van Sinderen (b. 1958) sat down with Erwin Olaf (b. 1959), who looks back over his lengthy career as a photographer.
Another great name we are proud to highlight in this special edition of GUP Magazine is Dirk Braeckman (b. 1958). Francesca Woodman (b. 1958) would also have turned 60, had she not sadly passed away in 1981, at the age of 22 Her work continues to be the subject of much critical acclaim and attention, but due to her untimely death we can only speculate on the continuation of her career.
Last but certainly not least, we’ve included a collector’s tip by our very own Roy Kahmann (b. 1959), the “founding father” of GUP Magazine who will turn 60 this May. And, of course, we didn’t forget to steer you towards an up-to-date selection of excellent exhibitions and remarkable books.
