Gup's Instagram Takeover: Cris Toala Olivares

From today until September 11, Amsterdam-based Ecuadorian photographer Cris Toala Olivares is taking over GUP's Instagram. Toala Olivares (b.1982) moved to The Netherlands to study medicine and social work, but after an experience in Gaza as a volunteer, his passion and urge to document the events he was witnessing, prompted him to start a career as a photographer, working mainly for news agencies such as Reuters and Associated Press. In 2012 he made his first reportage for the English edition of National Geographic, a story on the traditional peanut cultivation in Bolivia. Toala Olivares's work focuses on the relationship between human beings and their environment, and he was recently awarded with a Magnum LensCulture Photography Award in the Documentary Single Image Category. He is often travelling to chase the objects of his current obsession: volcanoes.

About this picture he says: "I took this shot of an eruption in my homecountry, Ecuador, when the air took on the most beautiful colours. When I offered the picture to Reuters, they thought at first that it was photoshopped. A mortal sin, of course, for a news photographer. However, it was absolutely not the case, I had just waited a long time for the right moment and the right colours to come". Cris is represented by Dutch photo agency De Beeldunie.
