From April 2019 until March 2020, Atelier Smedsby will once again run a one-year photography workshop in Montreuil (near Paris, France) and online. Deadline for applications is March 18, 2019.
Founded in 2010 by photographers JH Engström (b. 1969, Sweden) and Margot Wallard (b. 1978, France), Atelier Smedsby was formed with the objective of increasing the artistic independence for each and every participant.
During the course, general issues about pushing the possibilities of photography beyond classical conceptions will be addressed, students will be guided on how to control and reinforce their narrative and stage by stage issues related to different phases of the creative process will be discussed; from the original idea, production and preparation for each take, research for sources and documentation, to final decisions on the exhibition or editorial form.
Since its first edition in 2012, Atelier Smedsby has helped many aspiring photographers to gain experience and professionalism. Among them is Leif Sandberg (participant 2012-2013), who went on to publish the acclaimed book Ending in 2017. Karl Henrik Edlund, from a year later, was shortlisted for the Finnish Photobook Award 2017 with his publication Bright Hours. Christian Vium (participant 20114-2015) was appointed both FOAM Talent and Lensculture Emerging Talent in 2015.
The price of the one-year workshop is € 3600 and the deadline to apply is March 18, 2019. See the Smedsby website for more information and to apply.
